Cheltenham Borough Covered by a new ‘Air Quality Management Area’ designation

Cheltenham Council has recently created a new Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) to cover the whole of the Borough. This has come about as a result of the results of pollution monitoring at numerous sites around the town. Previously there was only one AQMA in the town near the High Street/Bath Road junction due to levels of Nitrogen Oxides exceeding allowed levels. Since then more testing has been done and shown that other locations including London Road at the Hales Rd junction suffer the same problem.

The cause of the high pollution levels in each case is the traffic nearby. While the levels would only cause harm if someone stayed in the area for a long time it does mean the council has to come up with a plan to solve the problem. Since traffic is the main cause it means working with Gloucestershire County Council who are responsible for all work on road and pavements. By declaring a town wide AQMA the council hopes to work with the county to try and remedy the problem in a holistic way.
