Recycling and waste collection changes – find out more

    ·       Road shows now running around the town ·       Canvassers visiting in March to show how much can be recycled
A series of road shows kick off around the borough this month to explain the changes to the council’s waste and recycling service, which are being brought in from Monday 4 April.
Running throughout February, March and early April, the road shows can be found at local shopping centres, supermarkets and arcades. Council staff will be on hand to explain the scheme changes and answer questions about the new service.

Also, throughout March, door-to-door canvassers will be advising householders in Cheltenham how they can make the most of all the recycling and composting opportunities provided through the borough council.

The changes include the introduction of a weekly food waste recycling service and having alternate weekly collections of non-recyclable waste. The alternate weekly kerbside recycling collections will remain the same.

Waste minimisation and recycling are some of the council’s highest priorities, and the council has signed up to recycling targets of 50% by 2015.

Cllr Roger Whyborn, Cabinet member for sustainability says: “We are promoting our new food waste service, alongside the additional items which can now be added to the recycling boxes such as foil and plastic bottles.

“Many residents still do not realise how much of their rubbish can be recycled and composted. That is why the road shows along with canvassers will be out and about to explain just how easy it is to make a positive impact on the environment by simply separating out your waste.”

“People who have not yet signed up to our new brown bin garden waste service can do so at any time, and we’d like to remind residents that they can still take their garden waste to our recycling centre on Swindon Road.”

Residents should be aware that all the canvassers will wear identity badges and their names will be held at the borough council. Residents who wish to check the identity of someone relating to this programme should contact 01242 264244. The canvassers will also be carrying letters of authorisation.

The canvassers do not need to come into the property and should not be invited in. They will also never ask for any personal information.
