Gloucestershire County Council’s Trading Standards service reminds people to be aware of scams as Christmas is fast approaching.
The service has put together a list of the most popular complaints they have received throughout this year, and asks people to remain vigilant in the New Year.
1. On the twelfth day of Christmas someone sent to me, a pair of fake UGG boots from China,
2. a dangerous set of Christmas lights bought online,
3. a fake lottery win letter,
4. an email asking me to help transfer money from a deceased bank account in China and Nigeria,
5. five fake gold rings,
6. a dodgy doorstep seller offering to fix my guttering, roof or driveway;
7. a phone call about my computer being infected;
8. a collecting bag for bogus charity
9. an offer to reclaim my bank charges and insurance premiums
10. a fake electricity saving device
11. a used car with clocked mileage
12. and counterfeit and illegally imported cigarettes.
There is also a Christmas podcast on the Trading Standards website (www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/glos), including discussions about the risks of buying fakes, unsafe items, problems of people trying to arrange loans online and some other tips on a Christmas theme.
